Iranian Embassy Siege

The Iranian Embassy Siege: A Concise Overview

Prelude to the Crisis

The Iranian Embassy siege was a five-day standoff that began on April 30, 1980, when six armed members of the Democratic Revolutionary Front for the Liberation of Arabistan (DRFLA) stormed the Iranian embassy in London.

The Incident

At 11:30 am on April 30th, the DRFLA members, armed with submachine guns and explosives, entered the embassy and took 26 hostages, including embassy staff and Iranian diplomats. The hostage-takers demanded the release of 91 Arab prisoners held in Iran, as well as the overthrow of the Iranian government.

Resolution

The siege lasted for five days, during which British authorities negotiated with the hostage-takers. On May 5th, the elite SAS unit stormed the embassy, killing five of the hostage-takers and rescuing all but one of the hostages, who had been killed during the initial assault.

The Iranian Embassy siege was a significant event in British history, and remains the subject of much discussion and debate.
