Serbia Remains Committed to EU Accession
13th Intergovernmental Conference Held
Serbia reaffirms its commitment to joining the European Union.
Participants in the 13th intergovernmental conference between Serbia and the EU expressed their continued support for Serbia's European perspective. The conference, held in Brussels, welcomed the progress made in Serbia's accession process and discussed next steps.
Serbia applied for EU membership in December 2009 and was granted candidate status in March 2012. Since then, Serbia has made significant strides in aligning its laws and institutions with EU standards.
Serbia's economic ties with the EU have also grown stronger. Serbia's exports to the EU have been growing faster than imports from the EU, and the coverage of imports by exports on the Serbian side vis-a-vis the EU has also been improving.
However, Serbia's non-alignment with EU foreign policy became clear in February 2022 when Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia joined the EU in imposing sanctions on Russia. Serbia has declined to join the sanctions, citing its traditional ties to Russia.
