Portugal's World Cup campaign ends in disappointment
Ronaldo fails to score in fourth consecutive match
Portugal were eliminated from the World Cup on Saturday after losing to Morocco in the quarter-finals.
The match was goalless after extra time, and Morocco won 3-0 on penalties. Cristiano Ronaldo played the full 120 minutes but failed to score, meaning he has now failed to find the net in his last four matches at the World Cup.
Portugal had the better chances in normal time, but they were unable to make the breakthrough. Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made a number of excellent saves, and the Portuguese forwards were also wasteful in front of goal.
In the penalty shootout, Morocco scored all three of their kicks, while Portugal missed their first two. Ronaldo stepped up to take Portugal's third penalty, but his effort was saved by Bounou.
The defeat was a huge disappointment for Portugal, who had been one of the favorites to win the tournament. Ronaldo's failure to score was a particular source of frustration, as he is Portugal's all-time leading scorer.
